Over eons, Scotland was situated at the intersection of colliding continents, creating an unrivalled geological diversity that is reflected in the stone of our buildings. Before the advent of transport links, materials were sourced locally, giving rise to regional variations that are very much a part of today’s landscape…Stone-built buildings were substantial and able to withstand the test of time, leaving us a rich, architectural heritage.

What is even more rewarding than studying the thoughts and motives of outstanding philosophers and impactful statesmen? Traveling to their part of the world. Stepping where they have stepped. Seeing and touching for ourselves where they formulated and expressed their ideas. Can you think of a better education than that? I can’t.

Scotland is home to a pilgrimage route that is up there in terms of importance with the better known routes to the popular disciple destinations of Rome (St Peter) and Santiago de Compostela (St James the Great). Why ? Well, the town of Kilrymont, or St Andrews as it was renamed, was home to some of the relics (bones) of St Andrew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and brother of St Peter.

So many of the stories we hear about travel in Africa are focussed on the Eastern and Southern parts of the continent, including Kenya,Tanzania, Namibia, and South Africa. I was based in West Africa for just over two years in the early 2000’s and had some great experiences, both with work and for leisure.

With over 2500 miles of single-track routes in the Highlands alone, it’s easy to find yourself in a tricky situation if you haven’t done your research into how to navigate them. However, they are also an integral part of the wonderful experience that exploring Scotland can become if you just follow some simple etiquette and basic rules.

This is Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve where the landscape changes before your eyes. Unspoilt, peaceful, and beautiful, the reserve has the full spectrum of coastal habitats, from constantly moving sand at the edge of the sea to the colourful dune heathland. 

Do you live on the East Coast of the United States of America and are desperate to get away for a beach vacation? There is a gem of a country only a couple of hours from the East coast that is waiting to wow you! That gem is the British island territory of Bermuda, and it is easy to fly to only a couple of hours by plane from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami.

2021 is Scotland’s “Year of Coasts and Waters,” and when it comes to spectacular beaches, visitors to Scotland are spoilt for choice. Mainland Scotland has over 6,000 miles of coastline. When you include the islands, this increases to well over 11,000, so the diversity of beaches should come as no surprise. Everyone will have their own particular favourites, and I’m happy to share mine. Controversial? Perhaps. Come visit and decide for yourself!

Croatia has some of the most spectacular coastline anywhere on the planet. One interesting part of that spectacle? All the Europeans who come there to get naked at the beach. In this post I’ll talk about the history of the nudist scene in Croatia, and some of the practicalities of checking it out, if that’s your thing.

A nation or a “Wonder World” that dazzles with color and chaos, India takes visitors on a journey of soul-stirring encounters. This country boasts a matrix of innumerable co-existing beliefs, a 5000-years old civilization, a home to some of the most colorful and vivid folklore from several ethnic groups, five seasons a year; a festival every day, a smile every second. It’s easy to realize that India is a magical paradox with modern connotations.

I hope everyone is nurturing some travel dreams for the not too distant future, and in this post I’ll give my top recommendations for where to travel in Eastern and Central Europe over the next year. As much damage as the pandemic has done to the travel industry, for people who are ready to hit the road again soon, you’ll find some incredible opportunities and bargains.

The Camino de Santiago is above all, a personal experience. No matter if you walk with your friends or with your partner, the rhythms of walking are different and there will be many miles where you bounce along with your thoughts. The Camino will change you for life. Do it for whatever reason inspires you, religious, spiritual, tourist, sports…regardless of how and why you start it, you will end it as a different person.

All men who, animated by curiosity and spirituality, understood what the key to intellectual progress was - like the philosophers, we must doubt everything, we must be open to new ideas, we must ask questions and explore.

I realize that I am blessed to have been born in the US (thank you , Mom and Dad, for seeking and working for a better life). I realize that I enjoy great privilege in being able to travel and learn from experiences and cultures from all over the world, and I do not ever want to take any of that for granted.

Because of the great ethnic and cultural diversity within each of the countries as well as the interconnectedness of all these countries with one another, there are actually more than 200 languages spoken throughout Europe. How do you bridge political, economic, social, and cultural divides when the mere act of communicating in the same language might not even be possible?

There are things in the world to fear and things that require a prudent approach. But the relentless messages of our culture are telling us to be unnecessarily afraid. I am grateful that travel has exposed me to a world not driven by fear.

After years of organizing wine tours in the Piedmont region in Italy, I still have to warn travelers about traveling in August. From an Italian’s perspective, Ferragosto lasts for almost the entire month, although the official date is August 15th. Italians traditionally take the whole two weeks off surrounding this day.
