The idea of traveling gluten–free in Italy might seem like a nearly impossible task (carb city!) but it is actually much easier than you think. Many Italians themselves suffer from Celiacs Disease and it is more and more common to find bakeries and pizzerias offering gluten-free alternatives. In Piedmont, I would even go as far as saying it would be more challenging to be strict vegetarian or vegan because of the local cuisine which is very rich in meats, egg and cheeses!

You can consult the website of the Association of Italian Celiacs for lists of certified restaurants in the area which are officially recognized as suitable for gluten-free diners. In Piemonte, it is always a good idea to book your meals ahead of time and especially in this case to mention that you are gluten-free (Celiaca).

The cuisine is genuine and simple with meat and fish dishes always on the menus. Piemonte is also known for fantastic risottos and vegetable antipasti and you can always ask for a salad off the menu. You will be surprised how many restaurants nowadays have special gluten-free breads and crackers available for the table.

So don't stress! Italy, although they love their carbs, is ready to accommodate your needs!
