Bilbao with Fran: A Modern City with an Iconic Museum

In the 1980s, Bilbao was known to be one of the worst cities to visit in Spain, but civilians and politicians turned this around cleaning the river, planting trees, and creating a new urban design. By the end of the ’80s, Bilbao was a proud, clean, and family-friendly city. It just needed the cherry on top: the new Guggenheim Museum.

In 1997, the museum opened its doors and soon became one of the most visited museums in the world, welcoming over one million visitors each year and bringing international recognition to the city.

If you are interested in experiencing the Guggenheim Bilbao in person, join Fran Glaria’s Basque Staycation Tour  to discover this magnificent city and have the ultimate Basque Experience.

Fran Glaria was born and raised in Pamplona, part of the Basque country in northern Spain. His passions for history, art and food, led him to tour guiding. Over 20 years ago, he started a small local guiding company in his hometown. This company evolved into designing tours in the Basque region, and also into organizing tours for the Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona. In 2012 Fran joined the Rick Steves’ Europe team and discovered a great way of teaching about his culture. You can follow Fran and Traveling Steps on Facebook and Instagram.
